Freedom to Read Week: February 24 – March 2, 2013

Every year, especially in library land,  we celebrate the intellectual freedom rights we are granted under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom. Meaning we can provide YOU access to a diverse range of reading materials, online and in print! However, schools and libraries often receive challenges from members of the community that try to censor or ban certain materials.

What types of things have been challenged in Canadian libraries?

This book was restricted in a K-12 school to students below grade 8  due to a complaint because of :

  • Violence
  • Racism
  • Age-inappropriateness

 

 

The Golden Compass (His Dark Materials, Book ) by Philip Pullmangolden compass

Library patron complained that this title should be burned or at least moved to the Adult section because:

  • Satanism
  • Occult
  • Violence
  • Religious viewpoint

 

 

Essex Countales from the farmty Volume 1: Tales from the Farm by Jeff Lemire

This Teen/Adult Graphic Novel received a complaint by a library patron for having shocking and offensive language.

 

 

 

 

 

Body Drama: Real Girls, Real Bodies, Real Issues, Real Answers by Nancy Amanda Reddbody drama

This book was shelved as a teen non-fiction book. However, a mother complained to move it to the adult section because it contains nudity.
